I recently went to the Bangor Harvest Festival and had a great time talking with everyone who came by the BDN stand. Not only were people pleasantly enamored with the “Desserts in a Jar” concept, but asked me whether or not I knew of other treats that could go into a jar for Christmas. It just so happens that I do and I would love to share them with you. Now the following recipes are well known and many people everywhere are making them. However, I made mine with much more flavor than many others you will come across. What makes mine different? Well, although I grew up on powdered milk, I don’t want it anymore. Nothing against my mother mind you, but enough is enough. So I substituted powdered milk with something even better and richer in flavor, nondairy creamer. What makes this creamer-infused mix great, as well, is that those of you who are lactose intolerant, can enjoy these gifts as well. Just remember to check and make sure you aren’t using milk chocolate chips. Enjoy everyone and have fun decorating these jars in a festive way!
3/4 c. sugar
1/2 c. cocoa
2 1/2 c. nondairy creamer(or powdered milk)
1/4 c. crushed peppermint candies
1/4 c. chocolate chips
This mix will fill a 1-quart Mason or canning jar (12 servings), but if your containers are different sizes, just keep the ratio of ingredients constant. On the back of the tag, write: “Mix contents in a large bowl, well, and replace back into glass jar. For each serving, place 1/3 cup cocoa mix in a mug and stir in 1 cup boiling water.” Wrap a couple of cinnamon sticks for the recipient to stir their hot cocoa with and don’t forget to add a tag and decorate as desired.
